Regarding the pm notification sent, you can scroll down and check the box for: "Save a copy of this message in your Sent Items folder" - note this is only available when you click post reply for PM instead of Quick Reply.

Also if you haven't, check out User CP>>Settings & Options>>Edit Options>>Messaging & Notification - lotsa choices on how you can get notified via email on changes on your threads/PMs etc.
